How Long Should You Work at a Company Before Moving On

Dear Office Mom,

Is it okay to stay for more than 5 years in the same job position or is it better to get a new experience elsewhere?

There’s nothing inherently wrong with role longevity. Why are you questioning your employment? Is it externally or internally driven?

Do you like your job? Are you happy? Are you paid well? Are there internal opportunities? Do you want to make a change? What experience can you gain elsewhere? And, why is that experience important to your career? Those answers should help. But, don’t feel pressured just because it’s been 5 years and you think maybe you should make a change.

If you aren’t sure how you feel, start exploring opportunities elsewhere. It’s a big world out there, so look around. When you find new positions that are intriguing to you or seem like a perfect fit, that will be a good indicator it’s time to move on. I hope this helps!
