Probably the best way to prevent team members from wearing political attire is to add an addendum to your existing dress code. Then, communicate the new policy and have team members acknowledge they read and understand it. While you’re at it, you may need to update the policy on work space decor and signs to prohibit political swag. Why do this? It’s all in the interest of preventing a hostile work environment (or at least a toxic, uncomfortable one). It’s not a violation of anyone’s rights as long it’s part of the company policy, employee code of conduct and employees are informed and acknowledge they read it.
Of course, if you don’t or won’t hold people accountable don’t change anything. A policy violation without consequences is a joke and usually irritates the hell out of people.
Also, before you do anything it might be helpful to get some employee input and buy in. You need to know the scope of the problem from the perspective of the employees who deal with it every single day. I hope this helps!
