Your boss can’t keep you from interacting with the team more effectively, getting their input to become more efficient as a team. asking for their advice while problem solving or figuring out a better way. Your boss can’t keep you from asking individual team members what is most important to them, and what their goals are. Your boss can’t keep you from being a credible leader or you asking what they need more of/less of from you as their manager.
People want to do a good job, and the overwhelming majority will be positive and more satisfied when these things are the norm. Pizza and doughnuts go a long way too. LOL. I hope this helps!
