Owning a business can be a great experience. You get to choose when you work, you can employ a great team that you’ve picked yourself, and you get to try and change the world through your big idea. There are so many perks to running a business, but sometimes you can get bogged down in the bad stuff. In fact, sometimes the difficulties occur because you’re making life a bit more complicated than it has to be. However, there are some mistakes that you can rectify in order to ensure the smooth running of your business, and we’ve noted them here.

You’re not communicating properly

Whilst you may think that you’re telling your team what it is that you want, you need to make sure that you’re communicating with them as effectively as possible. Communication isn’t a one way street, and you need to be listening to their concerns, too. Getting rid of the business hierarchy is one way to break down communication barriers, so don’t act like you’re the only one with any kind of authority over ideas. Your team will have a wealth of knowledge; after all, they are the ones who devote a substantial amount of their time to your business. Instead of having meetings where you just lecture them, encourage group discussion and the sharing of ideas.

You’re taking on too much work

When you have your own business, you just want to be able to do everything. After all, this is your company, and can you really trust anybody else to do the job properly? However, if you adopt this kind of attitude (as beneficial as it might seem) you’ll end up spending every waking hour concentrating on work, and this is just going to burn you out. There is nothing weak about admitting that you can’t do certain things, even if it is only because you don’t have the time to. There are many ways to outsource those jobs that you just can’t manage, from a phone answering service to your HR management, so don’t think that you have to do it all.

You don’t show enough appreciation

If you’ve had quite a few members of staff in the past, you’ll know how difficult it can be to find people who are willing to give a lot to your business. If you find those employees who always try their best when it comes to the tasks that you give them, if they are always trying to think of ways to do things better, and if they always show up on time and they are raring to go, you need to show them that it really matters to you. You can do this in a variety of ways, from talking to them about how much of a good job they’re doing (which they will really appreciate), to giving them bonuses and organizing staff meals and parties. This will be good for them, and for you.

You don’t plan efficiently

As they always say, time is money. If you’re a boss who doesn’t bother too much with planning, you’ll be losing a lot of money as a result, especially if your employees are always waiting around for new tasks to do. Different forms of planning work better for different people, so you can either do this on a daily or weekly basis, but don’t just leave everything up in the air. Not only will you forget to do things, but you will soon lose the look of professionalism that you once had. No client wants to call your business, only to find out that you’ve actually forgotten about what you said you’d do. It doesn’t look good, so get planning right as soon as possible.
